Enrofloxacin 200 mg.

Pharmacological properties

Enrofloxacin exerts its bactericidal effect through interaction with the A subunit of DNA.

bacterial gyrase, causing irreversible degradation of chromosomal DNA and blocking

the process of replication, transcription and recombination of bacterial DNA. This mechanism of

action is concentration-dependent.

Fluoroquinolones also act on stationary phase bacteria through a

alteration of the permeability of the cell membrane.

Enrofloxacin has a relatively high oral bioavailability. Fluoroquinolones are

characterized by extensive diffusion into body fluids and tissues, reaching in some,

concentrations higher than those found in plasma.

The degree of metabolism varies between species and is around 50-60%. Excretion occurs

through the bile and kidney, the latter being the predominant one.

Indications and target species

Chickens: Mycoplasma gallisepticum; Mycoplasma synoviae; Avibacterium paragallinarum; pasteurella

multocide; Escherichia coli.

Turkeys: Mycoplasma gallisepticum; Mycoplasma synoviae; Pasteurella multocida; Escherichia coli.

Rabbits: Treatment of respiratory infections caused by strains of Pasteurella multocida

sensitive to enrofloxacin.

Contraindications

• Do not use for prophylaxis.

• Do not use if resistance or cross-resistance to the

(fluoro)quinolones in the group of birds to be treated.

• Do not use in case of known hypersensitivity to the active substance, other (fluoro)quinolones or to

some excipient.

Route of administration

Drinking water.

Posology

Chickens and Turkeys: 10 mg of enrofloxacin/kg bw/day, for 3-5 consecutive days (equivalent to

0,05 ml of medication/kg bw/day).

Treatment for 5 consecutive days in case of mixed infections and in chronic processes. But

If clinical improvement is observed after 2-3 days, treatment should be reconsidered based on evidence of

sensitivity.

Rabbits: 10 mg of enrofloxacin/kg bw/day, for 5 days (equivalent to 0,05 ml of

medication/kg bw/day).

The weight of the animals should be determined as accurately as possible to avoid a

insufficient dosage.

The concentration of enrofloxacin in the water will be adjusted taking into account the daily consumption.

Special precautions

Fluoroquinolones should be reserved for the treatment of clinical pictures that have responded

poorly or are expected to respond poorly to other groups of antimicrobials.

To the extent possible, the use of fluoroquinolones should always be based on evidence analysis.

Meat:

– Rabbits: 2 days.

– Turkeys: 13 days.

Its use is not authorized in laying birds whose eggs are used for human consumption.
