St Croix iron horseshoe, racing type, rear size no. 5 · horse shoeing

What is the purpose of the rear St Croix horseshoe no. 5

If you're training a medium-sized horse daily, the intermediate size is usually the most popular. The St. Croix iron racing shoe for the hind foot, size 5, fits standard-sized hind hooves—neither too narrow nor too wide. It's supplied in pairs and is chosen by the farrier based on the trimmed hoof, not the horse's age or breed. On the hind foot, where the hoof is longer and rests on the toe, the shoe assists the horse's forward movement. This is why it's a high-turnover item in professional farrier supply stores. Farriers often reserve size 5 for mares and medium-sized horses and always carry a spare pair in their work van in case a shoe needs replacing during a race or training session.

How to use

The farrier is responsible for fitting the piece, adjusting it and checking the fit again at subsequent visits. Avoid using a type or size that doesn't fit. If your horse experiences lameness or discomfort, consult your farrier or veterinarian.

Why choose it

• Intermediate measure, the most versatile
• Racing iron
